No. 24: Topping it off with a little sex appeal
I don’t really watch football, unless there is beer involved but at this years Super Bowl party—there was so much beer. So I was given the chance to see just about every million dollar advertisement agencies had to offer.
And of course there had to be a least one for the ladies. I honestly don’t know what the dozens of mothers at this party would have done if TiVo wasn’t invented yet. Do you know how many times they rewound this commercial? Too many to count.
That being said, sex appeal in advertising really does work — go figure. But honestly the only thing I loved about this commercial was the use of The Animals song playing in background. The black and white film was also a nice touch. And actually, showing a close up of Beckham’s wedding ring was pretty comical to me (considering how many married women were drooling over his body while watching it).
All in all, this commercial really did stand out from the rest. It was short, but sweet and the eye candy was clearly a winner.
No. 22: Dogs, Cars, and Star Wars
Volkswagen has done it again, making Star Wars references to the masses and selling cars because of it.
Commercial advertisements can be boring. Or they can turn out like this one. Reaching just about every consumer living in the US watching football on a Sunday, Volkswagen has definitely earned their spot in the Super Bowl commercial lineup.
After a positive response to their 2011 Game Day commercial Volkswagen is living proof that the more Star Wars characters you put in an ad, the better. This sentiment also applies to cute and cuddly dogs…and what do you know! They added that too.
Covering all their bases for customer appeal seems to be Volkswagens number one priority, which is great because they really know how to hit the target every time.
No. 21: FedEx — fast
This ad may be two years old, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t clever, clean, and creative.
This idea was thought up by the intuitive minds at DDB. Demonstrating the speedy arrival of international FedEx packages is depicted nicely in this ad. There is something very special about receiving mail nowadays (disregard the hundreds of Papa John’s pizza coupons and unpaid bills piled on your kitchen table). Maybe it is just me, but I love seeing the FedEx truck in my apartment parking lot…even when I know its not for me.
In 2012, just about everyone has become addicted to the idea of receiving things instantly. So I find this ad to be a charming attempt to calm the nerves of anticipation growing within each of us while we wait for our packages. And by the looks of it, with FedEx, we won’t have to be waiting very long.
(No wait? I see no problem.)
No. 20: Artwork or Advertisement?
This light installation promoting the new-ish movie, Drive is simple and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it done before. But I like it regardless. Who needs an additional “wow factor” if you already know the movie has Ryan Gosling in it, right?
What I love about this is how it takes on the roles of both artwork and advertisement. Often times the fluid connection between these two executions is lost. Here, that is not the case.
The beauty in both art and advertisement most literally shines through this work.
(This is one of those things you see in a museum and think, “Why didn’t I think of that?”)

No. 23: “Penneys”
When I was younger JC Penney was never called JCP, it wasn’t even called JC Penney. This department store was constantly referred to as “Penneys” by the only woman I knew who shopped there, my grandmother. But a lot of time has passed since then and “Penneys” is finally cutting all ties to their cheap title.
In efforts to revamp their image, the new and improved “JCP” is taking giant leaps forward towards gaining new business.
For starters, they ran all new commercials featuring popular comedian and TV host, Ellen DeGeneres during the 2012 Academy Awards. Placing their ads during an extremely popular awards show gained the company favorable feedback.
These new commercials promote the affordability JCP has always had through the quirky humor of a trustworthy celeb. Introducing Ellen as their new celebrity spokesperson was another great idea. Celebrity endorsements can really make a difference for a company. So far JCP has done just about everything a company needs to do to save themselves from going under.
I can only hope they stick to the path before them and continue to show great work.
